The cherries are small
fruits with round shape, sweet flavour and different colors.
The cherry-tree (the Prunus Avium) is a plant growing in the
Mediterranean basin approximately for three thousand years.
The first news of its spreading was in Egypt, in the seventh
century a.C. Later on the cherry-tree has been diffused in Greece
( 3rd century a.C.) and in Italy. The cherries contain a discret
amount of vitamin C. Approximately 500 gr. of cherries is the
right quantity to satisfy the daily consumption; they contain
also potassium. It is a thirst-quenching fruit, above all the
sharper varieties, and has an high index of satiety. These features,
linked to its small dimensions and to the stone, let this fruit
to be suitable for the break-time, quick to eat and with few
calories. The cherry is rich of flavonoidi useful against the
free radicals. It is used to cure arthritis, arteriosclerosis,
enal disturbs and gout. Moreover it contains good fibers amount,
potassium, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A and C.
VARIETY
Bigarreau - the first variety on the market, already
sold in May, available till the beginning of june.
Black - this variety duracine (duroni) is available in June. It represents the main production of the land of Vignola (MO): sweet, big and with a dark red color.
Anella - available from the end of May to the end
of June. The peel has a graduation of color, from vermilion
to red dark, characterized by risp and juicy peel.
Ferrovia - Cultivated above all in Puglia. Available
in June. Well known for the crisp peel.
Marca - Yellow-red color and particularly appreciated
by the industry in order to produce cherries in syrup and
spirit.
